4 Year updateWe have two of these mattresses in our extra bedrooms. Our adult children have used them at different times, and we also use one of them in our camper van conversion. This mattress was worth every penny. It’s very comfortable and heavy duty. We’ve only ever used it as a bed, never a futon so it lays flat without any weird bends or folds in it. I don’t know if the same would be true if we also used it as a couch. Anyway, if you’re on the fence, go for it. It’s been 4 years and I am impressed with this mattress in every way.

Mattress on a MissionAbout a year ago, we got a mission style futon to replace our 20-year-old worn-out sofa. Our house is a Craftsman style bungalow, so the mission style futon fits nicely. However, the mattress that came with the futon was 4″ thin and was never really comfortable. In a short amount of time, you could feel the bars of the futon when sitting, so I began searching for an improved replacement. Of those I found as possibilities, I read all the reviews and finally decided on this mattress. This mattress had mostly good/great reviews, but there were some negative and scary reviews: fabric tears, tufting plastic breaking, mattress splitting down the center, bad smells (mildew and chemical), and the worst (but in only a very few reviews): bed bugs. I read every single review, weighed pros and cons, talked it over with my husband, and we decided to give it a shot.It arrived very quickly. We decided to open it on our front porch in case of strong smell or bed bugs. The box was sealed with glue, and it was difficult to break into (we didn’t want to use any sharp implements for fear of stabbing/slicing the mattress). Once we won our fight with the box, the rolled-up mattress was wrapped in a sheet of plastic, and then the mattress itself was vacuumed sealed inside more plastic. We unrolled the mattress and I was surprised at how easily it unrolled. We then liberated it from the vacuum seal (still on our porch). It, again surprisingly, immediately fluffed up. The smell, which was a common new textile smell, was so minimal, my husband didn’t even smell it until he buried his face into it. I have a very keen sense of smell, and while I did smell it (without burying my face), it was exceptionally mild. (I’m wondering if some colors have a more intense smell than others.) We then unzipped the one end of the fabric cover and searched all the folds, nooks, and crannies and found no sign of any unwelcome guests. We then closely scrutinized the piping all around, all of the tufted areas, and the zipper seam (inside and out) and there was still no sign of unwanted hitchhikers. We were going to let it air out on the porch, but the smell was so minimal, we decided to go ahead and put it in place. It is heavy, but not horrible. It’s more awkward than anything. But my husband and I easily carried it inside and put it in place. Bending/folding it into the seated position was also a little awkward, but again, not bad. Then we sat on it. I’m still sitting on it. Not only is it a major improvement in comfort, its stability makes it easier to sit down and then get up from the former thin, flimsy mattress. As far as sleeping, I haven’t opened the futon to the bed position, but just stretching out across the seated position, it’s very nice. It gives me great lumbar support, and I have a bad back. Laying on my side is also comfortable. For the money, I think it’s a great buy.If anything significant changes after we’ve had this for awhile, I will update this review. I may even update it if nothing changes. I hope our review helps others in making their choice.

Good quality for the pricePleased that the matress is thicker than expected and more comfortable. We had previously purchased a six in. matress and this 8 in. is three times thicker.

Looks good and is comfy – return immediately if you get a smelly one!6/23/13 Update: I didn’t like that the futon cover couldn’t be removed from this mattress – how am I supposed to give it a good cleaning?? Vacuuming isn’t enough. So I ordered a mattress cover from Amazon and also ordered a very nice futon cover for this mattress on Overstock.com for $40 and it looks and fits great. I ordered the 8″ chocolate cover and it’s very similar to the cover that comes attached to the mattress. Look for Ultima Full-size Microfiber Soft Suede Futon Cover on Overstock. I washed the cover and dried it on low and it was a little too saggy for my taste. The next time I washed it I dried on high and it now fits perfectly! Now I’m able to easily keep my futon fresh and clean.2/10/13 update: I ordered a replacement mattress and the new mattress smelled…. NEW! It did not smell old, musty, and gross like the first mattress that I received, which was a a huge relief for me. It definitely has a smell, but its tolerable and just smells like new fabric or material that hasn’t been washed yet. If, for any reason, you get a mattress that smells funky, I highly suggest you contact amazon because you likely received a mattress that was not manufactured properly or got wet somehow prior to being vacuum sealed by DHP. I’m sure my first mattress was a health hazard with that horrendous smell and I feel so foolish for hanging on to it as long as I did.Now that I have a normal smelling mattress I can finally say that I really like this on my futon. It’s really comfy to sit on and looks great. My only complaint now is that I have a solid wood futon frame is it can be a bit cumbersome to get the mattress from a bed to sofa position.Review of first mattress that I received:I have to agree with the previous reviewer. I also received a very smelly mattress and was extremely disappointed. The mattess itself is very comfortable and looks good, but my mattress stunk to high heaven. I’ve had it for three weeks and have tried everything I could think of to get rid of the smell with no luck at all. To me, the smell is not a chemical one, but a moldy/mildew/old smell. I finally contacted Amazon because I just could not take the smell anymore and they were able to work something out with me. They were actually very helpful and professional so they get TEN stars for being so awesome.I initially contacted DHP, but was informed that the mattresses are shipped to Amazon as soon as they are manufactured – no idea how true that is. The DHP rep also informed me that any smell from the mattress should go away within 24 – 48 hours so if it’s still there there, there’s def something wrong with it. Perhaps we got old stock. My mattress did have a date on it and, if I remember correctly, it was manufactured some time in 2011…maybe July, but I threw out the packaging the day I opened it. The mattress was sealed and airtight so I didnt think anything of the date. A few days after my 1/14/13 order, the chocolate mattresses taht were sold and shipped by Amazon went out of stock. I’m assuming they got new stock in as of 2/6/13 as the mattress is now available again to be sold and shipped by Amazon.Just a note to anyone who reads this – I am not being dramatic about the smell…It stunk up the whole room even with windows open and air purifier on. I had decorative pillows on the mattress (futon) and the material that was in contact with the mattress cover started to have the same stench. In my idiotic attempt to get used to the smell, I parked myself on my futon to watch a movie and after about an hour and a half my clothes and skin that had been touching the mattress also smelled of mildew…so gross. I should have contacted Amazon after a week of that smell, but kept hoping that it would go away because I really did like the mattress aside from the smell. There’s also no way to remove the mattress cover because the decorative buttons are stitched to the mattress. There’s a zipper, but it’s probably just so the manufaturer can get the cover on the mattress before tacking it down to the mattress.I do believe that I got a dud mattress so decided to order a replacement and am crossing my fingers that the new one is funk free. Ordinarily I would give this no stars (1 star), but the fact that I am ordering a replacement reflects the fact that I did LIKE the mattress, but somehow the one I got was defective or moldy…no idea. I’m willing to try again because the price is right and prime shipping is offered all the way to Hawaii. I’ll be sure to update my review once I receive the replacement. I’m really hoping that I don’t have the same problem.

2-year follow-up review.I purchased this futon mattress 2 years ago (May 2020) and I really couldn’t be more pleased with my purchase! Although I rated this 5-stars, I’ll list a few “cons” just to be transparent.(A usage note for comparison: My futon doubles as a couch for my home office, and also a bed for guests…)Pros:[Comfort] I use one of those egg carton mattress toppers on there when it’s laid out, and now prefer the futon over my actual bed. It is incredibly comfortable![Construction/Durability] After 2 years, mine has held up its original density. It doesn’t appear to have any real wear to it, like when couch cushions lose their cush. None of that here. I saw others post that theirs have easily ripped, but I have to assume that’s from catching on the frame they’re using, as mine still appears to be fully intact.Cons:[Functionality] As I also read in another review, this thing is pretty difficult to maneuver from bed-to-couch position, even with 2 people. But again, it’s to be expected; the thing weighs about 70 lbs. and is awkward.[Packaging] When mine first arrived (vacuum packaged,) it did take longer than expected to expand fully. I want to say it was almost 3 days. Also, I’m not sure if it was treated with something prior to packing, but it did have kind of a chemical smell to it that lasted several months. It was strong enough that I was concerned to use it for that period of time. It did eventually air out and no longer has any sort of odd smell. Guests have confirmed, so I’m not just immune to it.That’s all I’ve got. Overall, I’m very happy with this purchase, would buy again, and would recommend to others. Hope this helps somebody.

I would definitely recommend this mattress to any budget conscious buyer looking for …I would definitely recommend this mattress to any budget conscious buyer looking for just a basic mattress for themselves or a guest bed. Please see the pictures for the details. I have taken pictures of the whole process. First you have to carry what looks like a blue body bag into your house. Next, you shimmy the bag down the outside of the mattress. There is no need to cut the bag off, it comes off just fine with a little patience. I decided to go with the “stand the bag up, bear hug and squat technique” but do whatever works for you. Inside of the bag you will find a plastic wrapped rolled-up mattress inside of an outer plastic sleeve. It is okay to cut this off without fear. The magic doesn’t happen until you reach the next layer of plastic. I cut the end off and then slid the scissors down the bag until it opened. DO NOT CUT THE PLASTIC UNDERNEATH!! Next you will come to the rolled-up mattress itself. It should be secured with three pieces of clear tape that hole the roll together. Cut the three pieces of tape. As you cut, you will hear a pop as the mattress is released from the pressure of the roll. You will only need to barely cut the tape pieces and the mattress will do the rest. Then you unroll the mattress where you want it to be. If you are using this for a futon, then it would be best to open the futon to the flat bed formation before you do this. Trust me it will be a pain to move the mattress later, it’s pretty heavy.Okay, now here comes the fun part. Once the mattress is in place, position your cut on the side seam so that the mattress can expand fully and you can get out of the way after you cut it open quickly. IMMEDIATELY after you make your cut into the plastic the mattress will start to expand so slide the scissors up the side of the mattress plastic quickly and get out of the way. It should only take about a minute to fully inflate and you can continue cutting away the plastic. Mine opened up with the tags facing up so I flipped it when it was done expanding. If this doesn’t bother you then forget about it. Yes, there is a chemical smell, it came from a factory. No, it’s not that bad and it went away after 3-4 days.In all I am happy with this mattress. I am using it flat on a full size metal frame that I got from Walmart and it does not slide around on it at all. It also holds up well to me sitting in the same spot for a while. I hope this review helps you out, I noticed no one else had posted any pictures of the black one. This review is of the black version which is a true black, not grayish black or anything.

Heavy, NO HANDLES, and difficult to foldThere should be a special level of Hell for manufacturers who make a futon WITHOUT HANDLES and that is extremely heavy. Yes, the futon is good quality, very springy but hard as hell to move and it will not work with my futon frame because it is so heavy and so impossible to fold in half that in order to fold the frame into a couch, I have to take the entire mattress off… I suppose that is the trade-off. you get a solid, thick mattress but that is nearly impossible to fold. Also, the shipping was terrible. The box was so beat up by the time it reached, with holes in it, that unpacking the futon was a huge mess (dirt, dust). Would not recommend.

It suits my needsNot a fan of the blue plastic support pieces but I just need it for a guest room. May get a cover for it to hide them. Will reevaluate after some use.

Happy with what I got. Hard to set up aloneI usually don’t write reviews but this was such a crazy experience that I feel like I must. I recently went through a move and needed a new bed. My room is very small so I was in search of a futon. I managed to get lucky and snagged a beautiful used wooden futon frame at my local Goodwill furniture store. So my search for a mattress began. I had a tight budget so my options were limited. This mattress had the most reviews out of all the mattresses I looked at which was promising. I ordered the 8 inch full sized tan matttess for $118. Not a bad deal. The mattress was delivered swiftly and arrived in a box 📦. And it’s pretty heavy! I weigh 110 pounds so I recommend that if you aren’t determined enough to get it out and onto the frame by yourself you may need to find some help. However if you have no choice to do it alone (like I had to) I have some tips :)Step 1.) open the box at one end. Make sure you have plenty of room around you and make sure you have a place I rest your back. Place your feet around the edges of the box and hold onto the plastic with your hands and push with your feet and pull with your arms. Get it out as much as you can.Step 2: you will find that your legs may not be long enough to push the mattress all the weigh out so here’s what you gotta do. Go to the other end and open it. Then cut a hand sized hole on the top of the box near the edge. Put a leg or 2 in the box and push with your leg(s) while you hold onto the box and it should slide out easily enough if you use all your weight.Step 3: once out cut the first layer of plastic first and it’s important that you only cut the first layer. I also recommend you have your futon bed already laid flat.Step 4: once first layer is cut slide mattress onto futon and begin unrolling it (this will take some effort)Step 5: cut final layer of plastic and watch the mattress begin to inflate! It’s easier to remove the plastic if you cut all the way around that way you just have to pull it from underneath.Things I noticed about the mattress once I finished setting it up was the chemical smell. But from other reviews I read I believe that will fade in a few days. Lighting candles and incense helps though. It was also a little shorter than I expected it to be so I have an inch and a half gap on each side of the frame so if you are picky about that sort of thing make sure you get a mattress where you know you will be getting the exact size you need. It’s a firm mattress so if you want something softer I recommend purchasing a mattress pad to put on top of this mattress to make it more comfortable. Overall it’s a decent mattress for the price. And probably not hard to set up if you have the help. I hope this will help anyone thinking about buying this mattress

Relatively comfortable. The mattress is pretty comfortable and my daughter says it good to sleep on.Pro: comfortable and thickCon: Very stiff and doesn’t bend easily to fit the futon frame that I had purchased.I’m expecting the mattress to become easier to fold with time.
