Gorgeous, but whoa that assemblyLet’s start at the beginning, it was incredibly well packaged. Hard solid inserts on every edge to make sure there was no damage. Next, assembly. So many parts! 20 pages of instructions! They were well written and fairly easy to follow but still VERY time consuming. It took me about 2.5 hours, and I’m no newbie. It recommends not using an electric screwdriver. Let’s just say it would have taken me half a day to use a manual screwdriver. Definitely do yourself a favor and grab an electric one. So lastly, this thing is solid and looks amazing. Definitely looks like it cost a lot more than it did. I’m very happy with the results.

Very high quality for price. Vintage oak seems slightly darker in person.Upon receiving the package, I was struck by how heavy it is. I never looked at the weight before ordering.. It’s over 110lbs! I was not expecting this because other furniture I’ve ordered online tended to be light weight with questionable durability, usually some unrecognized brand straight from China. This is not that, and I should have known by the name Sauder. It’s a good American brand, and the quality demonstrates that despite the competitive price. This piece wouldn’t seem out of place at a Slumberland with a $380 price tag. If you build it right and treat it with reasonable care, I think it’ll hold up very well.Speaking of the building process, it took a pretty good while for me (admittedly I got distracted a time or two), but was doable, requiring only one screw driver (Philips head only! Thank you!) and a hammer. The instructions were mostly well written and depicted. Some steps had links to videos, which is nice, but I can’t say if they were effective because I didn’t utilize them. The plastic hardware wrap was inconvenient because it was all attached together. I’d recommend cutting the pouches to individual packs before opening them. May save you from losing hardware. After finishing the build and looking it over, I started to think I received the wrong finish. It seemed darker than I remembered in the picture (I ordered the Vintage Oak). I pulled up the Amazon photos and compared. The photos looked a little brighter and slightly more orangeish. Interestingly, though, when taking a picture of my particular cabinet and pulling them up side-by-side, they looked very similar. I compared on both my phone and my Surface. My only guess is that my lighting was off and the white balance on my phone’s camera compensated. If I could make two changes to the file cabinet:1) I’d add the ability to lock the drawers.2) I’d add an interlocking mechanism to the opposite side of the drawers too, because as it is, it only catches on one side and feels like you’re pulling the drawer out of alignment, lessening the feeling of quality. It’s a rare and unnecessary situation, but little details like that can go a long way.All in all, highly recommended. It’s a nice file cabinet that looks like quality furniture. This doesn’t look out of place in my dining room, and the quality exceeds expectations for the price.

A well-made, functional and attractive piece for our home office!Sauder gets an A+ from us for packaging, labeling of parts, clear, step-by-step instructions, and quality design and manufacturing! I had bought Sauder ready-to-assemble pieces over 20 years ago and I’m happy to report that Sauder still makes a high-quality product. The shipping box looked a little disheveled when it arrived, but the protective edges Sauder included on the box and the cushioning inside protected everything perfectly. The parts were ALL clearly labeled with letters and numbers that matched up with the instruction booklet. The different types of screws and connectors were pre-sorted, packed and labeled, and the step-by-step instructions have life-size pictures of the screws at every step to help ensure you use the right ones every time.Assembly was straightforward and only required screwdrivers, a hammer, some patience, an open space to work and a few hours of our time. The pieces and connectors all fit together perfectly. Assembly could be done by one “handy” person but I was happy to have my girlfriend’s help with lining up the parts, turning a few screws and keeping me on-track. If you are new to ready-to-assemble or not handy with a screwdriver, maybe ask a more experienced friend for a helping hand. The finished cabinet is sturdy and looks great in our home office. We have the matching Sauder Palladia L-shaped desk on order. We know that will be a much bigger assembly job, but if it’s as good as the file cabinet, it will be worth the effort.

Beautiful piece butq very difficult to assembleFirst, let me say this is extremely heavy. It took two of us to get it inside the house, unpack and assemble. Now let me share my experience with assembly in two words – ridiculously difficult! The instructions were poorly written and in some cases just wrong. Past reviews said it took one person 2.5 hours – well it took myself and a friend, who have both put a lot of furniture together over the years, nearly 6 total hours over two days. Everything from mis-drilled holes, to a track that was too narrow to fit the pieces that connected the front drawer panels. Do NOT attempt to put this together without a rubber mallet – which is critical to those fine adjustments to get the dowels and cams to actually fit in the pre-drilled holes which were off in several cases. We had to stop after 3 hours because our hands hurt from all the twisting of the screwdriver. One piece did not want to fit at all, but after many attempts, the mallet and making a hole larger we finally got the inner panel with the drawer slides in place. The anti-tilt mechanism was next to worthless as the piece had no way to lock into place to hold the drawer latch. The bottom of the side pieces is rough particle board and we had to add furniture felt to the bottom to keep it from scratching the wood floors. If you are placing this on hardwood make sure to use felt strips. The backboard was not squared which caused difficulty nailing it in and we had to make multiple adjustments to attach. After 6 hours we finally finished and it is in place never to be moved because this thing weighs nearly 200# when fully assembled. There is no clear way to use this for legal hanging files unless you balance the file hangers on the edges of the long round bar meant to keep the hanging brackets aloft. The ends of these long dowels rest in plastic, doubt it could withstand the weight of 40# of legal files so I abandoned that idea right away.I gave it three stars because in the end it is a beautiful piece of furniture. That said, if I were ever to buy another Sauder cabinet I would pay the overpriced assembly fee and let someone else deal with the headache of putting this beast together.

Whew! What a JobTook 7 hours to assemble. Drawings and direction left some critical perspectives difficult to decipher. But my slaves persevered.

Check alignments CAREFULLYWe have Sauder products throughout our office. This file cabinet seems sturdy & and well made. I would advise watching the video on assembly. I took my time and there were several steps that you will need to refer to the video. The written instructions are not enough.ALSO, check alignments of ALL holes before using fasteners.I had 2 sets if holes that were off enough to make a misalignment.Other than that satisfied with the purchase. It is working well for our needs.
