Better the second time around! After reading the 50/50 reviews on this bed, I decided that I would try the product anyway. I wanted a bed with storage underneath and was on a tight budget. I figured the extra work of putting it together was worth the benefit in price. It was cheaper to purchase the product from Amazon, although the same bed was on sale on the manufactures website. I had also purchased the headboard (no problems), dresser, and bookcase. Since I received the bookcase with a couple of broken pieces and was able to receive replacement parts from the manufacturer in about a week, I was not upset when there were broken pieces in this case. BUT…there were A LOT of broken pieces and South Shore would not replace…since over 50% of them were broken. I had to repack the bed in the the box and return it to Amazon. The good thing is that i just had to drag it to the front door and UPS picked it up from there. The shipping was free and I received a new bed in about a week. The new bed was packed totally different. There was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING broken. Why don’t they pack all of the beds like that? It is obvious that they have received enough complaints and returns that they have improved the packing process. It took me about four hours….alone….to put the bed together. The directions are not the easiest to follow(no words, just diagrams), but if you are used to putting together IKEA or other big box store items, it should not be too difficult. My son is six and this bed works well for him. I can see him possible outgrowing it when he becomes a tween. The drawers are great added storage space. We keep all his PJ’s and extra sheets in there. They open and close easily. I was concerned about the plastic sliders, however, south shore guarantees them for five years .(Their customer service has been easy to work with so far so I don’t forsee any problems. i would like it if they remembered you as a customer so your information didn’t have to be given everytime, but since you are “Amazon’s” customer, they don’t keep you in their customer database.) The bed is sturdy, has not signs of wear from the past 6 months. There were some frustrating events in this process, but I am satisfied with the finished product considering the amount of money I spent on the enire bedroom.

Simply Outstanding!I would normally go to IKEA to get something like this. But they did not have a twin bed that I liked and I decided to give Amazon a try for a big item like that. The shipping was free and I got the package about a week later. The PACKAGING was simply SUPERIOR! All the sides and corners of the box were wrapped in shock-absorbing kind of cardboard at least 2 inches thick!!! Everything inside the package was completely fine – and that’s after it had traveled by UPS Ground all the way across the country. The ease of assembly was comparable to IKEA’s items – but better! I.e. South Shore actually labeled the back sides of all parts with letters corresponding to the letters on the pictures in the assembly instructions – that’s a step forward from IKEA’s instructions. And the drawer rails can be hammered in – which better engineering design than IKEA’s where you have to screw in a million screws to attach them. All you need to put it together is a Philips screwdriver and a hammer. They even give a piece of plastic to use for hammering in the drawer rails (not to hit the rails directly with a hammer). All pre-drilled holes aligned perfectly, by the way. Now, about their customer service. I accidentally scratched one of the front drawer panels and I called for a replacement part. Also I really liked the drawer handles and I wanted to get more of them to put on my book-cases and my desk (that are of a similar color and style) in roder to make it look like they were a set with the bed. They picked up the phone right away and were really helpful. The call center are in Quebec. I’ve been to Montreal and it’s my experience that the service there is very polite/personal/friendly and generally exceeds my Southern California-based expectations. This was right in line with my previous Quebec experiences. I had 10 handles, 20 screws for them, and a replacement panel shipped to me for the total of $17 (including S&H)! And got an order confirmation email from them detailing all items discussed within 5 minutes after I getting off the phone. Now, is that an amazing value?!The bed looks great – just like in the picture. If I had to guess how much a bed looking like that would be priced for at a local furniture store – I’d say maybe $400-$600(?). I’ve been using it for a couple of nights now – no squeaks or anything – it’s just perfect! Very reasonably priced and everything about it has been simply outstanding! Solid 5 stars! I’d even give them 6 stars if that were an option 🙂

Great bedI bought this bed because when I was researching box spring mattresses, but was getting so discouraged because the cheapest one I could find had a $200 delivery fee.I hopped on Amazon and started searching for a basic little platform bed. I liked this one because it was under $150, and had drawers. I then purchased a 7″ memory foam mattress from Overstock. It fits so perfectly!Bed came in a box that had a few rips, but the bed itself seemed okay. My husband was dubious as he pulled the pieces out and checked them, because some of the particle board had cracks in it. But, a little wood glue and some clamps, and I guess it worked out, because he put it all together himself one Saturday morning (yay daddy!) I set it up with some cute bedding, and presto, our little girl transitioned from a toddler bed to a big girl bed.I moved her clothes to the drawers just in time for the new baby who took over the dresser, and she is a very happy little girl. If this lasts, it will be classy enough to make it through to high school. I may buy another one and store it in the garage for my newborn!Height is good for children, it’s fairly low profile; it would also make a great guest bed because you can make it like a daybed during the day and keep all the extra bedding in the drawers.Drawer warning: we will need to change out the knobs, they have ripped my legs open because they are super sharp. Need something rounded. Also, for safety don’t overstuff the drawers (like we did) even though they can take it, because they will not close and walking around them is crazy due to the knob issue as well as the sharp corners (or stock up on bandaids.) I just can’t see them against dark carpet, and every time I make the bed I get gashes.Overall: bed is a great little bed and is DEFINITELY worth it for the free shipping!!

You get what you pay forThis is a super cheap bed. It was delivered for free via super saver shipping. So I don’t know why I was surprised by the problems I had.Problem #1) Odds are, this bed will arrive damaged. Its a heavy chunk of several particle boards and awkward to carry. Hardly surprising then, that the first one I ordered was damaged en route. Fortunately, the damage was spotted before it was delivered, so it never made it to my house. If it had been delivered (like it was to some others whose reviews I read), I’m not exactly sure how I would have repackaged it, had it picked up and returned. Its too heavy for one person to lift and maneuver – and I guess that includes the delivery people. I ordered the bed again, and this time it arrived without any noticeable damage. 50% ain’t bad!Problem #2) Shoddy construction & annoying assembly quirks. The little handles/pulls on the drawers are sharp and have scraped my feet several times in the week I’ve used it. Lots of the holes and contact points for the various pieces don’t line up, so you have to force them into place. While I have problems with Ikea, they spend more time making their products easy to assemble at home. Several screws on this bed required a “robertson” (square head) screw driver. I have many tools, but not one of these. What’s wrong with a phillps or flathead? Dumb. Also, the directions read backwards, from the bottom of each page to the top. Really? So it took me 3 hours to assemble this bed, without Problem #3)…Problem #3) Missing parts. There were several missing screws, dowels, and whatnot. This would seem to be a small issue, but the bed can’t be assembled without them. I had to make a separate trip to the hardware store and then file down some wooden dowels so they would fit the holes. This took an extra two hours on a separate night. Conclusion: If I had to do it over again, I would have gotten the Nomad bed frame on Amazon, which my friend bought.

Nomad Solid Hardwood Platform Bed Frame – Twin Size

While it looks plain compared to the glamour shots that this South Shore bed has,it is much easier to assemble, more sturdy and has no real design flaws.

… a bed that had storage and was somewhat aesthetically nice. After I had made the purchaseI had gone ahead and purchased this bed without really reading the reviews because all I was concerned with was getting a bed that had storage and was somewhat aesthetically nice. After I had made the purchase, I freaked out when I read the reviews here; would it come damaged? Would it collapse on me the moment I lay on it?I seriously think this is a case of ‘people who like it forget to review and people who dislike it are a lot more vocal’ because i had absolutely NO problems with this bed at all. everything came perfectly intact, assembly was dumb easy and took 1.5 hours total, and it felt extremely sturdy! for reference: i’m a 146lb 5’7” 22yo and i slept on the bed with someone else roughly my size if a bit taller/leaner the very first night we assembled it, and we had no problems whatsoever. no creaking, no rocking, no signs of instability, and we had just got done watching paranormal activity, so we were screaming and bouncing around. (at least no demons could come from under the storage, right?)assembly was stupidly easy, and even if the directions are textless, they were extremely easy to follow. there’s a valid criticism that they include no tools — thankfully i had a supply of my own screwdriver and hammer, but anyone who doesn’t have a toolbox might be stalled for a while.yes, the storage drawer reels are plastic. but all three of my drawers are packed to the brim — i literally have to shove my clothes down to close them properly — and not only are they staying on their tracks just fine, but the bottom board isn’t bowing, either. i have to open and close the drawers every day when i get changed and etc. and i’m not exactly a gentle person, and there have been no signs of ripping off the tracks, or breaking or bowing or generally destroying itself.the moral of the story here is: it’s a good product, i thoroughly enjoy it, it holds up EXTREMELY well against the reviews i’ve read, and my only worry is that when i move next, i’m gonna have to disassemble and reassemble it all because it’s a tad heavy. i’m not discounting the bad reviews on here — s*** happens — but i’m certain a majority of them are from rich white parents who have never had to assemble their own beds before and got frustrated/did something wrong in the process to warrant the bed being unstable and decided to take it out on amazon. \=

Great bed for a “mild child” or small adult.I ordered two of these beds for my sons (ages 4 & 15) and I am happy with them. They were very easy to put together. The color is very dark–almost black which works great for the decor in my boys room. You actually don’t even see much of the bed at all if you don’t tuck in the comforter. The beds look nice, but I’m wondering how they will stand the test of time…FYI: the quality is OK, and pretty much consistent with any less-expensive, put-it-together-yourself furniture, but the drawer bottoms are on the flimsy side. They are fine for clothes, but I wouldn’t put anything too heavy in them (lots of books, etc.). The dowels are made of plastic, not wood, and so are the drawer guides. Also, the boards that the mattress sits on top of are questionable…They seem a bit flimsy as well. I think they will be just fine for sleeping on, but if you have a child who likes to jump on beds, or tends to be on the destructive side, I’m not sure I would recommend this product. I also wouldn’t recommend this product for an adult who is very large because I’m not sure the bed would hold up.UPDATE: It has been almost 3 years now, and these beds are still going strong. We haven’t had an ounce of trouble with them. They’ve even survived 2 moves (one of which was an 800 mile move). The only “con” we’ve had: The drawer handles are made out of metal, and they are square. It doesn’t feel good when you accidentally hit your leg on them! Either find different handles or don’t put them on at all. Other than this, these beds have been fantastic. Again…probably not great for a heavy person, or wild child!

Spark Collection Twin BedWe purchased this bed as our 3yo daughter’s first “big girl” bed. We did a little research on beds, and decided that a platform bed with drawer storage would best meet our needs, so after checking out various styles, this is what we decided to purchase. My husband put it together on his own, and I honestly don’t recall how long it took him, but he said there were minimal – if any – issues. We really like the way it looks and it seems quite sturdy. If I remember correctly, we have had the bed for just short of 4 months now, and have had no major issues with it. The only reason I don’t give it 5 stars has to do with the knobs on the drawers. They are ridiculously sharp, to the point where my daughter, a friend of hers and I have all gotten cuts on our legs or arms from scraping against them inadvertently. We have attempted to position her comforter over them as an extra cushion, but due to using a guard rail on one side, we can’t cover them completely. Again, though, if we really wanted to, it would be as simple as replacing them with a less “pointy” knob. For the price, we are truly satisfied with this bed, including the drawers (which we have actually filled quite full of various things – dress-up clothes, blankets, sticker books and art supplies), and are pleased with the purchase. Would definitely recommend it to someone looking for a reasonably priced, well put-together bed for a child’s room — or even guest room.

The bed I needed.I am a paraplegic widower, 59 years old. My space is limited by the need to have room to maneuver my wheelchair without obstruction. This bed gives me that, both in being a twin size and in having three drawers which obviate the need for a three drawer chest. The drawers could be longer, but they hold everything I had in a three drawer chest. With the headboard (sold separately) attached, there is plenty of storage space for anyone. The bed is high enough for me to transfer from my chair and back again without difficulty.I realize most who consider this bed will be doing so with a child or young teen in mind. Space is at a premium in any young person’s room also, and this bed gives you that. The bed comes in a flat package – a LONG, flat package – and weighs 130 pounds. My brother-in-law and I unpacked it outside and brought it in a few pieces at a time. All the parts were marked. Assembly instructions (which I had gotten via email in advance from the manufacturer) are not difficult to follow, and I recommend that you follow them carefully. With my brother-in-laws help, I assembled the bed and attached the headboard. It took us a while to put the bed together, but having already familiarized with the hardware by assembling the headboard (which came before the bed) and studied the instructions, it went smoothly.Just be certain to move the bed into position before you place the two pieces the mattress lays on – The bed is heavy and there is no place to grip it otherwise.I am not a 5 star kind of guy, but I am making an exception in this case. I am quite satisfied with the bed, and recommend it to young and old alike.

  10. Amazon Customer

Needs different knobs on the drawersThe only complaint I have about the bed is the knobs-they are square & so far I have ripped the skin on my leg open twice-so-have to go to the hardware store and buy knobs now that are round.
